Introduction

Hello World!  My name is Mark McKeown, and I am a Computer Engineering major at Washington State University.  I enjoy music, hanging out with friends and playing video games.  I look forward to my future semesters at WSU and hope that I will have a lot of great experiences with some great people.  I feel that I am a strong writer, but there is always room for improvement.  I look forward to learning more about myself throughout my freshman year and throughout my English 101 course.  This is my English 101 blog.

21st Century Communication

“What is Communication?”

Communication has changed a lot in recent years – recent developments in social media have shaped the new face of communication for this modern era.  Facebook, Twitter and other media sites encourage mass communication more than ever.  Text messaging and nearly global cell service have created a dense web of communication worldwide.  Children of this century are adapting to these changes much easier than most adults however.

My 4 year old nephew, for example, has mastered the use of an iPhone, while my mother – bless her heart – still fails to use it to its full potential.  This is the nature of technology.  In a world of rapid expansion and progress, it is easy to fall behind the curve of technology – and by association – communication.

“What does it mean to ‘learn to write’?”

Children today are learning to write very differently than in previous years.  I remember having cursive writing ground into my brain throughout elementary school, being told, “You will need this in Middle School and High School.”  (For the record, I have not written in cursive for nearly eight years.)  But I digress; I predict that the written word will be all but irrelevant with the increased emphasis and convenience of computerized communication and learning.  As long as technology advances, and humans continue to interact, communication will drift further into the computer age, and so will the learning process.  Just as I learned to write in crayons and pencils, children of future generations will learn to write, however their medium may be through pixels on a screen instead of other physical tools.
